Between 1944 to 1950, Billy Wilder directed three groundbreaking films, they were Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend and Sunset Boulevard.
Sunset Boulevard is a classic tale of how old and new Hollywood don’t have anything in common with each other. It also makes a powerful statement about the myth of the so called good old days.
William Holden is excellent as a struggling writer who finds himself trapped by an ageing silent movie star. His performance in this film is the best next to Bridge On The River Kwai and Network.
Mr Holden who plays the unemployed writer, does a good job telling his story throughout the film.
For Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, what a great comeback in a role, that at the time any actress would have given there eyeteeth to play.
Two of the best highlights in this movie, is the cameo from Cecil B. DeMille, who unlike Norma Desmond, does not live or reminisce about the so called good old days. He has moved with the times, plus he has become an older respected figure in modern day Hollywood.
The second highlight is the clever writing of the screenplay which was co-written by Billy Wilder.
I recommend this film for movie buffs
