When the Leprechaun’s hand pokes through the phone was compared to a similar scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). The director Mark Jones said it was never intended to be an homage to that scene. The effect was created using a foam rubber hand that Gabriel Bartalos operated with a cable off-screen.
